Your first tailoring visit: what to bring and discuss
Prepare useful references, shoes and questions for a calm, productive first tailoring visit.
Bring context, not a perfect vocabulary
You do not need tailoring terminology. Bring a few reference photos and explain what you like about each: a softer silhouette, a particular trouser shape or a more formal overall look. Mention the event, dress code and any parts of your existing clothes that feel restrictive. References start a discussion; they are not a guarantee of an identical result.
Think about the clothes worn with the suit
If practical, bring or wear the shoes and a shirt similar to those you intend to pair with the garment. They help you discuss trouser length, sleeve length and the overall proportions. A favourite existing garment can also be a useful reference for comfort; ask the shop whether it would help before bringing a large selection.
Move naturally during the fitting
Stand as you normally would, then sit and move your arms gently. Explain where you feel pulling, pressure or excess room rather than holding an unfamiliar pose. Discuss what you will carry in the pockets and how you expect to use the garment. Ask the tailor to explain any proposed adjustment you do not understand.
Leave with clear next steps
Confirm the garment details, price, fitting appointments and expected completion before proceeding.
